Drenia islands: the day trip from Ammouliani

A few minutes by boat from Ammouliani, the Drenia islets — the Donkey Islands — have the clearest water in the area: white rock, shallow turquoise sea and almost nothing else. It is the trip our guests ask about most.

  • Boat: about 10 minutes from Ammouliani port
  • Best months: June to September
  • Bring: water, cash, sun protection, snorkel
  • Facilities: very limited, none out of season

What Drenia is

Drenia (Gaidouronisia) is a small cluster of rocky islets between Ammouliani and the Athos coast. The water is shallow and impossibly clear, which makes it the best swimming and snorkelling of the trip.

How to get there

Small boats and water taxis leave from Ammouliani port through the summer, and the crossing takes around ten minutes. Ask at the port the day before, or ask us at reception and we will book it for you.

A good day there

Go early. The morning is calm and the light on the white rock is at its best. Take water, cash for the boat and the food you want, then stay for an afternoon swim before the last boats return.

Before you go

There is very little shade and almost no facilities, so a hat and high-factor sun cream matter. Boats depend on the sea: if the wind is up, plan a beach on the island instead.

It is too far and the boat channel is busy. Go by boat.

Ask us at reception

We will check the boats and the weather for your day.
